The Social Security Administration provides benefits for a person who is “disabled” as that term is defined by the Social Security laws. For disabled persons there are three basic benefits you may be entitled to under the Social Security Act.
Social Security Disability Benefits: These are benefits for someone who has a history of working and paying into the Social Security system, and who is therefore “covered”, and who suffers a disabling injury and/or disease preventing him/her from continuing to work. Usually this monthly benefit approximates 66% of the injured person’s average earnings over the last five (5) years prior to his/her disability.
Supplemental Security Income (commonly known as S.S.I.): These are benefits for someone who does not have a history of paying into the Social Security system, whether it is due to age or a lack of employment history, and therefore is not “covered” for purposes of receiving Social Security Disability benefits, and is disabled. These S.S.I. payments are a minimal stipend of about $700.00 per month. You must have minimal assets and/or minimal family income in order to receive this benefit.
Medicare Coverage: This is health insurance coverage if you are eligible for Social Security Disability or S.S.I. If you are eligible for these benefits, the Medicare premiums are deducted from your monthly benefits.
